PHOENIX -- A tortoise that was missing for nearly a week was located and reunited with its family on Thursday.

The 70-pound tortoise owned by Julie Olaguez and her mother escaped from their backyard when a gate blew open during last week's storm.

Bill Furman was contacted by his son after the son's friend found the tortoise walking near 31st Avenue and Madison Street.

Furman took Tread home and started taking care of him.

After a news report about the missing tortoise aired on 3TV, Tread's family was contacted and they were reunited with him Thursday afternoon.

"I'm so grateful for him, for one, taking care of my mom's baby and another for bringing him back," Olaguez said.

"He was absolutely a welcome visitor in our home for a few days," Furman said.

Although the family offered a reward, Furman said he wasn't interested.

"That's not what it's all about," he said. "It's just about pets and families."
