PHOENIX -- The man who beat a good Samaritan to death two years ago was sentenced Friday to 28 years in prison.

Roger Staats, 65, was riding his bicycle in January 2007 when he spotted an argument between Andrew Robins and Robins' girlfriend.

When Staats asked if the woman needed any help, Robins attacked Staats, hitting and kicking him multiple times. Robins also threw a bike on top of him.

Staats was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Robins fled and broke into a construction yard where he tried to steal a forklift. Glendale police officers arrested him a short time later.

In September, Robins pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and burglary.

Staats was an Air Force veteran whose son, an Army sergeant, was killed in Iraq a month earlier.
