PHOENIX -- Police are searching for the suspect who shot a person four times early Tuesday morning.
It happened at about 5:30 a.m. in the parking lot of a McDonald's on the corner of 51st Avenue and Cactus Road. There is also a childcare facility, as well as several stores and businesses that share the parking lot, which police completely cordoned off.
Details are still coming in, but investigators believe this started out as some kind of gun exchange or potential sale. The victim was in a white Chrysler 300 and the would-be buyer was in a black Ford Expedition, said Det. James Holmes of the Phoenix Police Department. Investigators are looking for both of those vehicles.
The 30-year-old victim, who reportedly lives in the area, was picked up by "a friend of a friend," and did not know the alleged buyer, Holmes explained.
"At some point, it just goes bad," Holmes said. "The suspect starts shooting. Our victim is shot multiple times."
Holmes said the victim, who has not been identified, walked into the McDonald's and sat down for a minute before asking an employee to call 911. He then collapsed on the floor.
The victim, believed to have been shot four times in the arms and legs, was taken to John C. Lincoln Hospital. He reportedly was in critical condition.
Officers on the scene cordoned off the entire parking lot as investigators try to determine exactly what happened. They also have a witness to whom they are speaking, but they have not released a description of the suspect.
"The biggest problem we have right now is there are weapons involved and we don't know where the weapons are," Holmes said.
Investigators spent the morning scouring the parking lot for those weapons, as well as any other evidence.
Officers from both the Phoenix and Glendale police departments were talking to residents who live nearby.
