PHOENIX -- A Maricopa County Superior Court jury handed down the death penalty Tuesday against a man who pleaded guilty in the 2007 shooting death of a Phoenix police officer.
Edward James Rose tried to cash a forged check at a Phoenix check-cashing store near 83rd Avenue and Encanto Boulevard in July 2007.
Police said Rose's girlfriend, Norma Lisa Lopez, distracted Officer George Cortez Jr. as he was trying to arrest Rose, which gave Rose the opportunity to shoot the officer.
The shooting was captured on the store's surveillance video.
In August, Rose confessed to the killing, saying he was high on meth. Rose pleaded guilty to first-degree murder, conspiracy, fraud, theft, forgery and burglary.
Lopez pleaded guilty to charges of second-degree murder and was sentenced to 22 years in prison.
