PHOENIX -- According to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office, there's a serial cat killer on the loose in the East Valley.

The sheriff's office warns that someone appears to be intentionally inflicting severe injuries to a number of domestic cats.

Investigators say at least 14 cats have been injured or killed. The cats suffered long, deep stab wounds along their backs.

Two of the cats have died and others required costly veterinarian care.

The cats have all been owned by people living in Mesa, Tempe, Chandler and east Phoenix.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio said his volunteer posse will assist deputies in their search for the suspect.

The Humane Society of the United States is offering a $2,500 reward leading to the arrest and conviction of the perpetrator(s).

Anyone with information can call the sheriff's animal abuse hotline at 602-876-1681.
