PHOENIX – A man took a terrifying ride down a California freeway after a Toyota model that is not on the gas pedal recall list accelerated and would not stop.

A California Highway Patrol officer helped stop the car by getting in front of it and hitting the cruiser's brakes.

National Highway Traffic Safety investigators are now trying to determine what caused that gas pedal to stick and that driver is not the only Prius owner with problems.

3TV spoke to a Valley woman who says her Prius is doing something dangerous too.

Shifting your car into neutral will help stop the car and that is what the man in California did initially but that did not work.

Marianne Larocca says she hopes to never find herself in the same situation. She says she has some serious concerns about her brand new Prius. “Ii saw the story this morning and said ‘Oh my god’ I could not believe it.”

Larocca says she bought her brand new 2010 Prius in September and took the car back a month ago because of the recent recall. She explains, “I got it fixed, it was for the brake and it was a computer glitch.”

She was barely starting to feel confident in the car again when she saw the story about the man in California on Monday. When she called her local Toyota dealership, a man told her he did not know what all the fuss was about.

Larocca explains, “He said all the guy needed to do was put it into neutral.” So Larocca told him, “Ninety miles an hour. I don't know what to do so I'm going to get in the car and you're going to walk me through it.”

She says that is when she discovered a problem with her Prius shifting into neutral. “It’s a little scary and now it’s a lot scary…because neutral doesn't work in this car.”

3TV tried to get a hold of some local dealers for comment but they declined.

To anyone who is saying that it is impossible to steer with the engine off, and that it is even worse when you're doing 90, please go back to school and learn how to drive. If for whatever reason you can't drive without power steering, then perhaps you shouldn't be driving a car. Really, all it requires is that you use some upper body strength. Plus, due to the laws of BASIC PHYSICS, the faster you are moving, the easier this is! At any rate, this article is wrong. The man in California on Monday didn't even try to put his car in neutral. He even said that, during an interview. He said he though about putting it in neutral, but didn't because he was afraid that he would somehow make the car flip over.

Add another Prius "defect" - None of them seem to go faster than 55 mph on the freeway. Can somebody look into that? :p

Goodness I must be old. You don't need power steering at 90MPH and steering ability is not inhibited at that speed (any speed really). I'm from the days when power steering was an expensive option. I loved my first power steering car because I could turn the wheel sitting still or at low speeds without any effort. At higher speeds (15mph ) it makes no difference and in fact, read up on it a little bit and you'll see that part of the fuel economy is achieved by shutting off power steering at higher speeds. Part of the problem is people don't know you can drive a car shut off without power steering. That was a major lesson in drivers ed but drivers ed is not longer a given in today's educational environment.

rcandbarb....no power steering at 90 miles an hour means no reliable steering...so now you're still screaming down the road at 80 and can't steer. Ummm, I don't want to be in any of the lanes around you, lol. These cars needs to be pulled off the road...not only are they a danger to their owners, but every one of us on the freeway around them are in mortal danger. Ever been slammed into by a car going 90 miles an hour and not even trying to stop. Seatbelts won't be enough to save you. Sadly it will probably take a few more deaths or scary incidents like the guy in California before serious action is taken. I dislike government interference, but frankly, right now I'd be jumping for joy if the Feds would tell Toyota they need to get every one of their cars off the roads until they figure out the problem. Oh....and my DH owns a Camry....which has been parked since the recall started. Not taking chances. Thankfully we can...most family don't have a spare car!

As I recall from the few Priuses (?) I drove, it goes into neutral a bit strangely compared to real cars, but will go. Don't like the d--n things, (any/all Toyotas) but I've driven a lot of them with no problems. Many of the stories seen so far indicate a lack of competence on the part of the vehicle operator.

Why can't you just turn the key off? No power steering would be better than going 90 miles an hour with no hope of stopping.

She needs to define her terms. How is neutral "not working"? Does it stay in drive? Will it not SHIFT into neutral? What? "Neutral" is "Neutral" which means it's supposed to be "out of gear" i.e. "coasting". Does it not coast? If so, she has a transmission problem.
