PHOENIX -- In addition to fireworks, we could be seeing some other activity in the skies on July 4. The forecast is calling for the monsoon to make an appearance, but that won't stop major celebrations from taking place.
"Don't be afraid of the weather!" said Lance Gray of the Kiwanis Club, which helps organize the Tempe Town Lake Festival and Fireworks Spectacular. "The weather gods will take care of us."
Gray said crews will be prepared with extra sandbags and other supplies should a major storm move in during the event on Wednesday night, but he said he expects the fireworks will go on regardless of weather conditions.
The Tempe event starts at 5 p.m. with fireworks slated for 9:20 p.m. Admission for children and veterans is free.
In Phoenix, officials have a contingency plan if there are heavy winds and rain during the Freedom Wireless Fabulous Phoenix Fourth Independence Day celebration, a free event which starts at 6pm, with fireworks slated for 9:30pm.
"If we do get some weather, our plan is to wait it out," said David Urbinato with the City of Phoenix.
Urbinato said if rains are heavy the fireworks will be postponed but said if it gets later than 11 p.m, crews will re-evaluate.
