PHOENIX -- One person is in the hospital after an early morning fire at a mini-mart and restaurant. Investigators are calling the fire suspicious and say that man is a person of interest.
It happened at about 3:30 a.m. Firefighters arrived on the scene near 12th Avenue and Hatcher Road to find flames shooting through the roof. The fire was a first-alarm assignment, which means there were many resources devoted to it.
Firefighters said it's possible that the injured man either fell or jumped off the roof of the burning building. He reportedly broke his leg when he was impaled on a spiked fence next to the building.
That man reportedly told fire crews that he saw somebody starting the fire and was trying to stop him.
As investigators try to piece together exactly what happened and pinpoint the fire's ignition source, they are considering the man a person of interest.
The building was destroyed.
No other injuries were reported.
