Gilbert man charged with murder in death of 2-month-old daughter

GILBERT -- A Gilbert man has been indicted in connection with the death of his 2-month-old daughter.

Ricky Martinez, 20, was indicted Thursday on the following charges:

  • First degree murder, a class 1 felony and dangerous crime against children and a domestic violence offense
  • Child abuse, a class 2 felony and dangerous crime against children and a domestic violence offense

On November 8, Martinez called 911 and said his daughter Lilliana injured her head when she fell off the bed while he was changing her diaper.

"I heard a crack when she fell and it's really, really, really swollen the side of her head," Martinez told the 911 operator.

Lilliana died in the hospital four days later. Police arrested Martinez the next day.

"The infant fell basically from a bedroom bed, fell on to a carpeted floor," said Sgt. Mark Marino of the Gilbert Police Department. "The injuries that the infant sustained were not consistent with a fall from that height and that distance."

Martinez reportedly also has a 16-month-old child with his fiancee.

first of all, this man already has a 16 month old with his fiance....he cant change a diaper of a 2 month old without the baby falling on the floor? Somebody needs to check out the 16month old...bet she has a few marks on her too. This is such a sad story. i pray for this family, for their loss and the pain they have endured.

This "man" is my nephew and i know in the bottom of my heart as well as the rest of our family that he DID NOT do ANYTHING to hurt his daughter!! this has been a tragic and unfortunate event that has happened to our family and we are praying every day for his wellbeing and safety. Lilliana was chosen to be with our lord before she was ever born, it is not for us to understand but only God to do his will and hopefully in due time God will allow Ricky the opportunity to prove his innnocence.
