Gilbert police: Father killed 2-month-old daughter, 911 tape released

GILBERT - Police have released the 911 call in the case of a Gilbert man accused of killing his 2-month-old daughter.

Ricky Martinez, who turned 20 Saturday, has been booked into the Fourth Avenue Jail. Police say he lied about how his daughter was injured last Sunday.

According to the 911 call, Martinez said the baby fell off the bed while he was changing her diaper. He said she injured her head in that fall.

"I heard a crack when she fell and it's really, really, really swollen the side of her head," Martinez told the 911 operator.

On Friday, one day after the baby died of her injuries, police arrested Martinez on charges of child abuse and first-degree murder.

"The infant fell basically from a bedroom bed, fell on to a carpeted floor," said Sgt. Mark Marino of the Gilbert Police Department. "The injuries that the infant sustained were not consistent with a fall from that height and that distance."

Martinez, who reportedly also has a 16-month-old child and his fiancee, is being charged dangerous crimes against children, in addition to child abuse and first-degree murder.

Look at the smile on this idiots face. I hope he smiles like that when his roomies get a hold of him in prison. And then I want to see that same smile when they give him the death penalty and yet that same smile when he is injected!!! And then lets see how big he smiles when he faces God.

By the smirk on his face, he looks like he is proud of what he did. Another so called man that should be let loose in the general female population, handcuffed. When they are done with him and if he is still alive, castrate him.

before you guys hang this kid, shouldnt you consider the evidence? History? I mean it sounds pretty flimsy to me. Im for the death penalty for muderes, but I hate witch burners alomost as bad.

This was a 6 week old beautiful little girl what in the heck could she have ever done to have something so horrible happen to her. There is no excuse or reason or accident that could explain this. This was a maliceous act from a terriable two faced person , how can someone act so loving in public around others and then to have done something so unspeakable to his own daughter i know you will get what you deserve in this world and the next you had us all fooled you less than human piece of ........ you have messed up so many lives and have taken a piece of family history away from us she might have been the one that saved us all with her peace and wisdom may god forgive you because i do not

I give him the benefit of the doubt. Horrible accidents happen every day. Should they happen? No- Could they be prevented? Yes. I say let this guy have his day in court. The only opinion that matters is the 12 people that will serve in a jury.

A 6 week old cant roll yet. I have 7 week old at the house now. You say, how could this murder happen???? DRUGS. He HAD to be on DRUGS. There is no other reason. No one in their right mind would kill a 6 week old. I am making myself sick right now. I look at the baby in my house right now and could not imagine him gone. I hope he rotts in HELL

Here's my thought's on this, My son was two weeks old when his two year old sister picked him up off my bed abd accidentally dropped him while trying to bring him to me because she thought I forgot him. My bed was higher than most, yet my son had a slight subdural hematome (bruise) on his head. For this six week old baby to have suffered the injuries she did, it wasn't a bed she fell off but an angry out-of-control "parent" that caused her injuries. I took my son immediately to the hospital where he was then transferred to the children's hospital for a two day stay. He's fine now, thank God, but I could never do to my child what this boy did to his. I hope he rots in prison, or even better, mob justice is served.

none of u people know ricky! you werent there when all this happened so how can you decide what you dont know?? your supposed to be innocent until proven guilty not the other way around! this is something very tragic that has happened to BOTH sides of the family nobody understands the pain they are going thru. you cant believe everything the media has said they dont have the facts only Ricky knows what happened that tragic afternoon. God be with Ricky and Aurora and blesses them a HE sees fit.
