PHOENIX -- Even as hot spots continued to smoke and smolder Friday morning, investigators are trying to determine what sparked a massive three-alarm fire at a moving and storage company Thursday evening.

The fire at The Ultimate Movers, which is located in an industrial area near 30th Avenue south of Indian School Road, started at around 5:40 p.m., about 20 minutes after the manager locked up the building and left. for the evening. The fire quickly went second alarm, which means more resources were called out. Dozens of crews from Phoenix, Glendale and Tempe responded. The fire was later escalated to a third alarm.

Firefighters on the scene took a defensive position to battle the flames almost immediately, pouring water on the blaze from two separate ladder trucks positioned on opposite sides of the building.

"It looked like they had it under control and then it just erupted into this major ball of fire," said Suzanne Webster. "It's continuing to burn like it's never going to end."

Aerial video showed flames shooting through the roof. Thick smoke pouring off the building was visible for quite some distance.

While the building and almost everything in it -- firefighters said furniture and personal belongings were stacked to the ceiling -- were destroyed, no injuries were reported.

About 100 firefighters were on the scene for most of the night and into the early morning hours.

Damage estimates were not immediately available.
