TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) -- Losing water in Tempe Town Lake will actually help the construction of the first pedestrian bridge to span the urban lake near Arizona State University.

A bow string arch bridge will span about 1,000 feet on the lake's west end and will open in May of 2011.

The new crossing spans the Tempe Center for the Arts and the pedestrian paths on the lake's north side.

The bridge will offer pedestrians the only place to cross on a structure that doesn't also carry traffic.
