GILBERT, Ariz. -- One person is dead and two others are in the hospital after a wreck that closed the eastbound lanes of the Loop 202 SanTan Freeway at Gilbert Road Friday morning.
The collision occurred under the Gilbert Road overpass at around 8 a.m.
A Department of Public Safety employee was involved in the crash. According to DPS spokesman Raul Garcia, the man, who was driving a DPS vehicle used to help drivers, was air-lifted to a trauma center.
DPS confirmed that one person was pronounced dead at the scene and one more was transported.
The names of the victims have not been released.
Aerial video from the Fort McDowell Casino News Chopper showed two medical helicopters at the scene.
At this point, it's not clear what caused the wreck.
The eastbound lanes reopened at approximately 3 p.m.
