TEMPE, Ariz. -- A Tempe man is alive, thanks to his dog.

Flames broke out at a house near Price and Guadalupe roads while the homeowner was sound asleep early Tuesday morning. His dog woke him up to a back wall full of flames.

Two-year-old Daisy jumped up on Aaron Guthrie's bed to at about 1 a.m. when she sensed the fire danger. Guthrie scrambled to get Daisy, another dog and six puppies out safely. One puppy was missing for a short time, but firefighters later found it hiding in the backyard.

Fire investigators believe flames started on the back patio. Guthrie is a mechanic and had a lot of flammable items stored in the backyard.

The fire quickly moved up the back of the home and into the attic, destroying about 90 percent of the home.

Guthrie is just thankful for Daisy. It's because of her that he made it out safely with all his pets.

Guthrie said Daisy was already his best friend. Now, he knows she's extremely loyal and trustworthy and she'll get to sleep on his bed.

He also hopes to find good homes for the puppies.

Investigators are trying to figure out exactly how the fire started.
