PHOENIX -- A man and a woman are fighting for their lives after they were hit by a pickup truck while crossing a street near Paradise Valley Mall Wednesday morning.
According to police, the couple was crossing against the light.
It happened at about 4:30 a.m. at Cactus Road and Paradise Village Parkway, which is near Tatum Boulevard. That is on the southwest corner of the mall.
The driver of pickup was on his way to work at the time of the wreck. He stopped and stayed at the scene, which is exactly what a driver should do when something like this happens.
Police do not believe impairment was a factor in the crash.
According to officers on the scene, the man and the woman, both of whom are in their 40s or 50s, suffered very serious injuries. The nature of those injuries was not immediately available.
Because the couple was crossing against the signal, it's not clear if the pickup driver, who apparently had the right of way, will face any charges in connection with the accident.
Investigators have not released the names of the driver or the victims.
Police expected to keep the intersection closed through the morning rush hour. 3TV traffic reporter Gina Maravilla suggested Shea Boulevard and Thunderbird Road as alternates to avoid the closure.
