PRESCOTT VALLEY -- Several emergency room employees were injured after a patient assaulted them at the Yavapai Regional Medical Center East Campus Tuesday night.

When Prescott Valley police officers arrived at the E.R., they found several members of the hospital staff holding down the combative suspect.

Officers were able to handcuff and further restrain the suspect, who was identified as Daniel Rafael Avila, 24, of Prescott Valley.

According to Sgt. Brandon Bonney, Avila was belligerent and threatening officers and their families while he was being arrested.

Officers learned that Avila was at the medical center for a mental health evaluation.

While in his room, Avila was biting at his restraints and starting to remove them. Bonney said when staff members tried to stop Avila, he attacked multiple personnel by pushing and punching them. One employee was knocked unconscious during the attacks.

Employees were able to overpower Avila and restrain him until police arrived.

Multiple hospital employees received injuries and were treated by colleagues.

Avila was booked into the Yavapai County Jail in Camp Verde for multiple counts of aggravated assault and disorderly conduct.
