PHOENIX -- A 1-year-old child was hospitalized after being rescued from a Phoenix pool on Friday.

Authorities said the boy was pulled from the water by his 12-year-old brother. When fire department personnel arrived on the scene the child’s mother was performing CPR with the help of a 911 dispatcher.

"At the time things did not look good. The child was unresponsive while the work was being done initially on scene. We are getting a report right now that the child...has a heart rate and is breathing on his own," said Capt. Hugh Chase with the Phoenix Fire Dept.

The incident occurred at 43rd Avenue and Cactus. The pool didn’t have a barrier, and there’s no word on how long the child was in the water.

The boy was taken to Banner Thunderbird Medical Center. Authorities said the child had a pulse when he arrived at the hospital, but he’s listed in serious condition.
