MESA, Ariz. -- Mesa Police arrested a man on an aggravated DUI charge after a 4-month-old girl lost her life this week.

Authorities said Shawn Lewis Dale, 19, walked into a Circle K at 2815 E. University on Monday evening carrying Teonna George-Brown.

The child was unresponsive and appeared to have a high body temperature. She was taken to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.

It is believed that Dale is a friend of the family who was babysitting the child while her parents were at work.

Dale allegedly told Mesa Police that the girl's father asked him to pick him up Monday afternoon. Dale told investigators he got lost, and drove around for several hours with the 4 month old in the back seat of the car, which did not have air conditioning.

Dale was subsequently arrested for aggravated DUI for driving with a passenger under the age of 15.

Mesa Police have said that the child’s death appears to be related to the heat, but they are still investigating the case.
