UPDATE: The suspect has been identified as Cruz Armijo.

CHANDLER -- A high school student was arrested for manslaughter after accidentally shooting his 18-year-old friend in a Chandler home.

Police were called to the home in the 5600 west block of Butler Street at approximately 1:30 a.m. Sunday on a report that someone inside had been shot by a burglar.

After further investigation officers learned three high school students were inside the home when 17-year-old Cruz Armijo began handling a gun that was inside the home. The gun discharged and hit 18-year-old Jeremy Reed of Mesa. Reed later died at the hospital.

Armijo then took a different gun and fired rounds out a back window. He told police a burglar fired one round into the home, striking Reed, and he had returned fire.

Armijo was booked into the Maricopa County Juvenile Facility on one charge of manslaughter and five counts of unlawful discharge of a firearm. He was later transferred to adult court.
