BUCKEYE, Ariz. (AP) -- Authorities say a Buckeye woman is in custody for allegedly punching and strangling her 5-year-old son.

Buckeye police say 36-year-old Sharon Begay is being held on suspicion of aggravated assault, child abuse and impeding breathing.

She was ordered held on $50,000 bond Monday after her initial court appearance. Begay doesn't have a lawyer yet.

Begay's teenage daughter called police Saturday night and they say the boy was found with injuries to his head, face and neck.

Police say the boy told officers his mother threw him down the stairs and punched him several times in the face and head before strangling him.

He was taken to Phoenix Children's Hospital for treatment.

Police say Begay told them that another one of her sons caused the victim's injuries during some rough play.
