PHOENIX -- A 6-year-old Phoenix boy has died from injuries that police believe were inflicted by his parents.
Jacob Gibson Sunday morning after he was found not breathing and having convulsions at an apartment near Glendale and 19th avenues early Tuesday morning.
According to police, Jacob's parents beat him with belts and hangers and deprived him of food as discipline. Investigators said that last week he was thrown into a door so hard his brain swelled.
Benny Gibson, 49, and Jennifer Paul, 37, are being held on child abuse charges.
The Phoenix Police Department will work with the County Attorney's Office this week to review appropriate charges against Gibson and Paul.
"It will be our objective now to determine exactly who caused the lethal injuries to this child and hold that person responsible," said Phoenix police Sgt. Trent Crump.
Child Protective Services had looked into Jacob's parents several times since 2005.
