PHOENIX -- Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio is out of the hospital after breaking his shoulder earlier this week.

Arpaio sent out a tweet Saturday afternoon saying he had been released. Arpaio added that he appreciated everyone's support.

Sheriff's officials said Arpaio took a spill Thursday, which caused a break in his left shoulder. He reportedly tripped and fell on his way to lunch in downtown Phoenix.

He is being treated at St. Joseph's Hospital and doctors said he will not need surgery.

"Arpaio joked with the emergency staff about being happy the injury was to his left arm not his right as he needs his right arm for his Smith and Wesson and his Smith Corona," according to a statement from the sheriff's office.

Sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Brandon Jones said Arpaio is very pleased with the level of care he is receiving from the medical staff and wishes to thank all those who have called in or sent messages hoping for his speedy recovery.

Jones said Arpaio is in excellent spirits and will return to work soon.
