PHOENIX -- A suspected gang member from California is dead after allegedly kidnapping and assaulting a woman and then getting into a altercation with a Phoenix police officer.

It started with a 911 call about a fight at about 8 p.m. Sunday. An officer arrived at a home in the area of 71st Avenue and Thomas Road to see a Hispanic man running away. Believing the man to be connected to the fight call, the officer went after him.

When the officer approached the suspect, the man tried to grab his gun out of his holster. The pair struggled. The officer got control of the gun and fired, hitting the suspect. The 34-year-old man, whose name has not been released, died at a local hospital.

Investigators believe the suspect to be a gang member from California, but they have not released any information about him.

The 27-year-old officer, who has almost five years on the force, suffered minor injuries.

Police learned that the fight stemmed from the alleged kidnapping and assault of a 35-year-old woman. According to the woman, the suspect assaulted her over a period of several weeks and then her home Sunday.

"The fight at the home started after the suspect assaulted the victim once again and her family learned of the suspect’s treatment of her," said Officers James Holmes in an email to media outlets. "A physical fight ensued in front of the home between the suspect and the victim’s family."

The woman's brothers were chasing the suspect when the officer spotted him running.

Detectives are looking into to the woman's allegations of kidnapping and ongoing assault.

"The extent of injuries to the female victim is unknown at this time," Holmes said.

Investigators have not said how the woman and the suspect knew each other.
