TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Swedish home furnishing retailer IKEA says it plans to install solar panels on the roof of its Tempe store.
The project is expected to begin next month and be completed this fall. The 46,000-square-foot configuration will consist of two 300-kilowatt-hour systems, each built with approximately 1,300 panels.
IKEA's solar program in Tempe will produce approximately one million kilowatt hours of electricity annually for the store, offsetting 712 tons of carbon and equivalent to powering 86 homes. The IKEA store in Tempe opened in 2004.
It'll be IKEA's third solar project. The company says one system is operational in Pittsburgh and another installation now is under way in Brooklyn, N.Y.
