PHOENIX (AP) — A judge has sentenced a Mesa woman to life in prison plus 17 years for the death of her boyfriend's child.
A Maricopa County jury found 24-year-old Heather Nicole Miller guilty in December of 2009 in the death of 3-year-old Isaiah Vargas.
In March of 2007, Miller falsely claimed the child had been kidnapped.
After an exhaustive search for the child, Mesa police questioned Miller and it was learned the child had been buried near a dirt road in Mesa. Police alleged that Miller caused the death through blunt force trauma.
The body was located on April 1, 2007. On April 9, 2007, Miller was indicted on first degree murder and child abuse.
During sentencing, Miller apologized to the family.
