PHOENIX (AP) — Conditional budget cuts that would be implemented if Arizona voters reject a temporary sales tax increase would reduce spending across state government.
But Republican legislators' budget plan would place most of the $867 million of conditional cuts on education, particularly K-12 schools. Including universities and community colleges, cuts for education would total $550 million.
Other big cuts by dollar amount would be applied to the state's Medicaid program and the Department of Economic Security.
Most agencies would see cuts ranging from 5 to 12 percent. The 3-cent, 3-year tax increase will be on a May 18 special election ballot.
