DOUGLAS, Ariz. (AP) — Two little girls are found Wednesday evening living alone inside a Douglas mobile home, their mother in custody for allegedly smuggling drugs.
A neighbor discovered the children, ages 3 and 1. Both were described as dirty, poorly clothed and hungry.
Cochise County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Carol Capas said they weren't sure when the children had last eaten.
Capas said their mother, 23-year-old Honora Carillo, was arrested Tuesday and placed in federal custody for allegedly transporting 150 pounds of marijuana.
Deputies took the children to the hospital. The girls appeared to be relatively unharmed and were turned over to Child Protective Services.
The county attorney will determine what charges the mother could face.
