MESA, Ariz. (AP) — The City of Mesa has been running a nationwide search for the next police chief, but few outside of Arizona are interested in the post.

The reasons vary and include difficulty in selling a home and fear that a spouse won't find a job.

Mesa Mayor Scott Smith said he was surprised that few applicants are willing to move west.

Smith said the city did not anticipate the impact the economy would have on the search for a new police chief.

Despite the limited number of out-of-state applications, Smith said Mesa has plenty of quality candidates for the job.
