TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — A Border Patrol agent escaped injury Monday evening after his patrol vehicle was hit by a suspected drunk driver on Interstate 19 south of Tucson.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety said the agent had been stopped along the shoulder on northbound Interstate 19 near the Sahuarita Road exit to assist a motorist with a blown tire.

DPS Officer Quent Mehr said another vehicle that was attempting to pass slowing traffic struck the Border Patrol vehicle.

Mehr said the agent, who was not in his vehicle at the time of the collision, had to dive over the guardrail to avoid being struck but was not injured.

The driver of the vehicle that hit the Border Patrol cruiser was transported to a local hospital with undisclosed injuries.

Mehr said the cause of the collision is under investigation, and impairment is suspected.
