MAYER -- A 6-year-old boy was swept away after his family's pickup truck became stuck in floodwaters near Mayer Thursday night.

Yavapai County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a reported swift water rescue incident near Old Sycamore Road between Highway 69 and Interstate 17 at approximately 8:45 p.m. Thursday.

A preliminary report indicated that David and Katrina Baudek attempted to leave their Chauncey Ranch area home to take their ill 6-year-old son, Jacob, to the hospital. Their vehicle became disabled in floodwaters of the Agua Fria River and swept off the main roadway.

Sheriff's office spokesman Dwight D'Evelyn said somehow the mother was able to reach higher ground away from the vehicle as the father moved their two kids to the truck bed for safety.

A person in the area was able to throw the father a rope while others called the fire department.

As fire personnel began arriving on scene, the floodwaters rose and swept the three from the truck bed. The father was able to get to ground with his 8-year-old daughter, Desiree, but Jacob was missing and presumed swept away in the floodwaters.

Rescuers searched both sides of the river's banks throughout the night but could not locate Jacob. On Friday afternoon rescue teams spotted a jacket belonging the boy's mother farther downriver. More teams will be sent out to search through the debris.

D'Evelyn said deputies are classifying the effort as a recovery due the presumption a young child could not survive in these conditions.

It is a awful shame but the driver should have known better than trying to ford the raging flooded roadway, here's where the stupid driver law makes sense.

I was too harsh, It's just really bad that they drove into that torrent, and the hell they must be going through!

I'm the boy's grandfather. The most disappointing thing to me, besides the insensitive comments, is the sloppy news reporting. Here are the facts. It was not the Agua Fria, it was Yarber Wash. Yarber feeds the Agua Fria. It was not flooding at the time they tried to cross. The boy had a fever approaching 104 and needed to see a doctor. The water was less than 8” deep when they entered. They were swept by a flash flood. It was timing of nature, not disregard of “stupid motorist laws”. They knocked out the back window of the vehicle to get out. My daughter was swept away by the flood waters. My son-in-law held on to my grandkids for almost two hours while the Mayer fire department could only stand by and watch. My daughter made it out of the wash and got a rope. It was when my son-in-law was trying to save his children that he lost his grip on his son. Please, don’t cite stupid motorist laws when you don’t have the facts. To the rest, our deepest thanks.

How sad. I'm praying for this family. At least they found his body (per azcentral and kpho) and can give him a correct burial.

My heart goes out to the boy's grandfather(hokans) and family. It's a shame what people say before they know any facts. I'm glad you spoke up to these idiots writing in. God Bless you.

I read a post in another station's web site that makes me believe I did not do the Mayer Fire Department justice. I said that my son-in-law held on to my grandkids for almost two hours while the Mayer fire department could only stand by and watch. It is not that they did not try, it is just that the flood waters were just too violent. I was there when the rescuer that was on scene came back and made a very tearful plea that the family forgive him though he was helpless to do anything. He was deeply struck by this tragedy as well. They did the best they could. I hope no one thinks lesser of the on-scene responders.

mygrandson- you and your family have my deepest heartfelt sympathies. I can't even begin to imagine the heartbreak you're all feeling right now. Little Jacob's dad and mom did what they thought they had to do to get him to the hospital. We just never know when things will happen. Sending hugs to you all...miracles do happen so we'll keep hoping for one but know we're all thinking about you and your family at this time. Thank you for clearing up the whole story. and people wonder why we get irritated with news stories-
