New plan proposed
8-lane Loop 202 extension proposed to link Phoenix, Chandler - A new plan to connect Chandler and West Phoenix has been unveiled, but not everybody is in favor of it.
The Maricopa Association of Governments on Monday announced their plan for an eight-lane freeway extension of the Loop 202.
The 22-mile route would cut through the Ahwatukee Foothills and the South Mountain Preserve to connect the two cities.
Previous suggestions included a 45-mph parkway and a 10-lane highway.
This new proposal, which was drafted last month, would cost about $1.9 billion, making it more than $550 million cheaper than those options.
Construction could begin as soon as 2017.
Many Ahwatukee residents are against any expansion of the Loop 202. Not only are they concerned about noise and pollution in their community, they're also worried about possible harm to wildlife in the South Mountain Preserve.
