PHOENIX – Three people are dead and two more are in the hospital after an early morning shooting at Phoenix apartment complex Thursday. Police are looking for six suspects in connection with the shooting.

Police have identified two of the dead victims as Nathaniel Holmes, 26, and Carmela Jackson, 35. Officers are still trying to contact the third victim's next of kin.

It happened at about 3:45 a.m. Thursday just east Interstate 17 on Campbell Avenue, which is between Indian School and Camelback roads.

Dozens of units were called out. Police immediately set up a large perimeter and were looking for at least two cars that were spotted leaving the neighborhood. Police believe the shooters were in those vehicles.

Officers started at the edge of the perimeter and worked their way in to where the shooting actually occurred.

All five victims are adults. Two men were pronounced dead on the scene. One of them was identified Holmes.

The survivors -- two young men and a woman, according to scanner traffic -- were taken to a local hospital.

One of those people, later identified as Jackson, later died. The other two victims suffered life-threatening wounds. Their conditions were not known.

There reportedly was at least one child inside the apartment at the time of the shooting. That baby was not injured. The child's father, however, was one of those killed.

Police are talking to witnesses, trying to piece together exactly what led up to the deadly shooting. There reportedly was some kind of altercation outside one of the apartments before bullets started flying.

According to a witness, one of the victims might have owed one of the suspects some money.

Nobody is in custody at this point, said Phoenix Police Sgt. Steve Martos.

"It's early on in the investigation," Martos said. "We're hoping to get a little more detail and a description put out."

Officers are searching for several suspects, five black men and one white woman. That group reportedly barged into an apartment just before the shooting.

Police have not released any information about those two vehicles seen leaving the area, but officers are looking for them.

Investigators believe the victims were somehow acquainted with the shooters, but they do not yet know the nature of the relationships.

Police have not released the names of the two survivors.
