NOGALES, Ariz. -- U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers arrested a 34-year-old Mexican national after discovering $1.6 million in marijuana concealed in a shipment of canned jalapeños.
As the driver of a Freightliner tractor-trailer attempted to enter the United States at the Nogales, Ariz., commercial port facility Tuesday, officers referred him for an additional inspection.
A CBP narcotics detection canine alerted to the presence of drugs inside the truck's shipment of canned jalapeños. Officers found more than 2,000 cans filled with marijuana.
The driver was arrested and referred to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security Investigations.
The 3,300 pounds of marijuana and tractor-trailer were processed for seizure.
