PHOENIX -- One person was killed in an overnight car crash in the Biltmore area of Phoenix.

It happened at about 11 p.m. Wednesday in the area of 24th Street and Missouri Avenue.

The car was apparently traveling south at a high rate of speed when the driver, who has been identified as Nitza Tlalmanalco-Decidero, lost control and slammed into a palm tree in the median. The impact ripped the car in two and snapped the top off the 50-foot palm tree.

Tlalmanalco-Decidero, 32, was rushed to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Video from the scene showed two wreckers hauling away the mangled halves of the car.

According to Sgt. Steve Martos of the Phoenix Police Department, Tlalmanalco-Decidero, who leaves behind a daughter, was not wearing a seat belt.

Martos said speed, weather conditions and impairment were all factors in the horrific crash.

Police kept 24th Street closed in that area all night while they conducted their investigation. They have since reopened the street.
