PHOENIX (AP) -- The judge considering challenges to Arizona's immigration enforcement law is scheduled to hear arguments Friday over the Arizona Legislature's request to join the governor in helping to defend the law.

Lawyers for the Legislature say lawmakers should be able to defend the law against a challenge by the U.S. Justice Department and cited a new state law that lets legislative leaders participate in efforts to defend the law.

The Justice Department says the Legislature would prolong the case and that state lawyers are adequately representing Arizona's interests.

U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton had put key parts of the immigration law on hold.

Gov. Jan Brewer is appealing that decision.
