More Phoenix Local News09:25 AM Mountain Standard Time on Tuesday, October 7, 2008
PHOENIX - Police are investigating a late-night shooting involving an officer.
Shortly after 10 p.m. Monday, Officer Fred Stuart was on a routine patrol near Sky Harbor when he saw the suspect, Jason Engels, 27, riding a bicycle near the west economy parking lot.
The officer turned on his lights to indicate he wanted to talk to the suspect, but the suspect refused to stop.
A foot chase through a parking lot occurred.
Shortly after the chase began, the officer noticed Engels had a gun and at one point, he pointed the weapon at Stuart.
Stuart fired one round at Engels before the suspect dove under a car, slightly injuring his shoulder.
Back-up arrived and police were able to take Engels into custody.
When police arrested the suspect, he indicated he was living on the street.
Police said Engels’ weapon was found to have a “class three” malfunction, which indicates he was attempting to fire at the officer.
Stuart is a 27-year veteran with the Phoenix Police Department.
Engels is facing charges of aggravated assault on a police officer.
