PHOENIX - The following is a release from the Phoenix Police Department:

On September 4th, in continuation of an identity theft investigation, search warrants were served at two separate homes in north Phoenix.  Detectives found numerous items used to enable criminals to commit identity theft (including miscellaneous false identities, forced checks, computer equipment and software). All four suspects were arrested and charged with Aggravated Identity Theft.

According to investigators, this identity theft ring may have been in operation for three years. The suspects would create forged checks with identities they stole through burglaries from vehicles and homes. They would then use the checks to purchase personal items at stores throughout the Valley. At times, the suspects would return the purchased items for cash.

This investigation is ongoing. At this time, investigators have not been able to determine the total dollar amount that was stolen by this group of criminals.

Detectives would like to remind the community to shred mail; not disclose personal information; monitor credit card and bank statements; and report suspicious activity to the police department. The Phoenix Police Department Crime Stop (non-emergency) phone number is 262-6151.
