More Phoenix Local News06:13 PM Mountain Standard Time on Thursday, August 28, 2008
UPDATE - The signatures were not filed by the 5 p.m. deadline.
The mayor issues this statement
“I am proud of the work we’ve done together over the past five years and am focused on the agenda we’ve set for the city of Phoenix for the future. The voters of Phoenix elected me to do a job and that’s where I put my energy and attention.”ORIGINAL - PHOENIX -- Time is up for the group behind a petition to recall Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon to gather signatures.
The signatures are due at the county clerk's office Thursday.
The group, which is called American Citizens United, wants to oust the mayor for what it calls his weakness in fighting illegal immigration. The group also believes GOrdon has been dividing the community.
The petition requires more than 23,000 valid signatures from registered Phoenix voters. That figure represents 10 percent of the total votes cast in the past mayoral election.
The mayor's office said it's expecting the group to turn in about 40,000 signatures.
The clerk's office has until Nov. 14, to verify the validity of those signatures.
Signatures of people who are not registered to vote or those convicted of a felony will not count.
If the ACU petition is certified, a recall election will happen on March 10.
