The following is a press release from the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office:

COTTONWOOD -- On June 22, 2008, at approximately 10:45 P.M., Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office Deputies responded to a reported vandalism that occurred in the 1900 block of Rancho Manana Circle, Cottonwood. The investigation led to details about a related assault earlier in the day.

The homeowner reported finding several offensive, threatening words and graphic images spray painted on several buildings and vehicles at the location. Deputies confirmed the vandalism and learned the threats were directed towards the homeowner's daughter. Some of the letters contained his daughter's initials and the homeowner suspected his daughter's ex-boyfriend caused the damage.

A YCSO deputy spoke with the victim's daughter who identified her ex-boyfriend as 20-year-old Charles Lee Abril, from Clarkdale. She told deputies that Abril had confronted her earlier today while she was in a vehicle with two of her friends. They were traveling down Main Street when they were suddenly cut off by a black truck driven by Abril. With their vehicle now blocked, Abril stopped his truck, exited and grabbed a large rock with apparent intent to assault his ex-girlfriend. Fortunately, one of her male friends stepped out of the vehicle causing Abril to stop his advance and drive away.

A YCSO deputy contacted Abril at his home in Clarkdale and although admitting contact with his ex-girlfriend and her friends on Main Street, denied any intention to assault her. Based on the statements from the three victims and the extensive vandalism to the home on Rancho Manana Circle, Abril was arrested for one count of felony vandalism and three counts of misdemeanor assault.
