The following is a press release from the Arizona Department of Transportation:
UPDATE: Thursday, March 27, 11:20 a.m.:
The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) today has reopened State Route 87. The highway was closed in both directions Friday after a landslide created unsafe conditions in the Slate Creek area (milepost 224). Drivers will travel through a work zone with one lane in each direction and a reduced speed limit as they pass through the area affected by the landslide.
"Our team has moved quickly since the landslide to make State Route 87 safe for motorists and restore this critical link between Northern Arizona and the Phoenix area," said ADOT Director Victor Mendez.
The decision to reopen State Route 87 was made after thorough inspections, removal of unstable soil and assessments by ADOT engineers who have been at the site of the landslide since it occurred. The northbound lanes have been determined to be safe for drivers, meaning one lane in each direction will use this side of the highway to pass through the Slate Creek area.
Motorists will travel through a two-mile long construction zone with one lane in each direction. The speed limit on State Route 87 will be reduced to 45 miles per hour through the work zone. Motorists must slow down and drive safely through the work zone.
UPDATE: Tuesday, March 25
PAYSON - State Route 87 remains closed to traffic between the Bush Highway (Saguaro Lake Turnoff) and State Route188 while work continues to stabilize a slope where a landslide occurred Friday (March 21).
The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) says there is no projected date for reopening SR 87. Crews continue to use heavy equipment, including bulldozers and front loaders, to remove dirt from the hillside where the landslide occurred along the southbound lanes of State Route 87 (west side of the highway).Drivers who normally use SR 87 between the Phoenix and Payson areas are advised to use US 60 and SR 188 (through Globe) or Interstate 17 and SR 260 (through Camp Verde) as detour routes.
Motorists can dial 5-1-1 for information about the closure. The landslide along SR 87, near Slate Creek (milepost 224), caused sections of the highway’s southbound pavement to buckle.
UPDATE: Monday afternoon
Road crews are trying to repair the damage that has shut down the Beeline Highway.
State Route 87 between Phoenix and Payson has been closed in both directions since Friday.
The Arizona Department of Transportation says a landslide caused the pavement to buckle and the roadway is unfit for traffic.
Crews are clearing the highway and there is no word yet on when it will be back open.
The following press release was issued by the Arizona Department of Public Safety:
PAYSON - The Arizona Department of Public Safety is advising motorists to take alternate routes as State Route 87 is closed in both directions.
Underground springs are percolating and essentially washing away the roadway near the town of Sunflower just south of Payson. The highway is completely closed down which will impact travelers who are headed to the high country and returning to the valley this weekend.
Southbound traffic is being routed onto State Route 188, while Northbound Traffic is being closed at the Bush Highway near Fountain Hills. There is no estimate as to when SR87 will reopen both north and southbound but ADOT says the highway will remain closed through the weekend.
DPS is recommending the following alternate routes:
For motorists traveling north please use either US 60 through Globe or I-17 north to State Route 260 from Camp Verde to Payson. This is also the recommended route for those traveling southbound from northern part of the state.
DPS will be monitoring the situation throughout the weekend and will work with ADOT to keep the motoring public informed of the closure.
