The following news release was sent by the City of Mesa:

MESA - The Mesa Fire Department’s Fire and Life Safety Education office is launching a new campaign called “Look Before You Leave.”

The campaign targets drivers by using a window cling as a visual reminder to them to look around their vehicle before entering the vehicle and backing out of a driveway or parking space.

Window clings are currently being distributed to customers that have their child safety seat inspected by the department. Mesa residents who would like a free window cling can pick one up at the Fire and Life Safety Education Office located at 13 West First Street, Mesa, AZ, 85201.

This year there have been a few backing over incidents in Mesa. The most recent incident happened this past Friday. A three-year-old child was injured when her grandfather’s vehicle backed over her.

What makes most of these incidents even harder to deal with is that often the vehicle’s driver is a loving family member or friend.

Here are some safety tips to help keep children safe around cars:

*Firmly hold the hand of children when in driveways, parking lots, and sidewalks.

*Drivers, even those without children of their own, are cautioned to do a safety check to look for children walking or playing around cars.

*Drivers should walk all the way around a parked vehicle to check for kids, toys, and pets before entering the car and starting the motor.
