UPDATE: Suspect in bank robbery, crash has criminal past

UPDATE 12/6: Dept. of Public Service revealed new details into the fatal high speed pursuit that killed a bank robbery suspect and another driver Tuesday evening.

Bank robbery suspect was being pursued by police.

Police say the suspect, Richard Schwartz, 25, - wanted to kill himself. They did not elaborate on how that may have played a part into Tuesday's pursuit and collision.

They identified the victim as Alexander Ahmad, 24.

Police also say that the suspect was involved in several other recent armed robberies.

Court documents show Schwartz had already spent seven months in prison on a DUI arrest and for fleeing from law enforcement.

UPDATE::
The suspect in Wednesday's bank robbery in Tempe may be responsible for five others in the Valley.

Police are still trying to determine exactly who caused the deadly crash.

Police say around lunchtime on Wednesday, the suspect walked into the Bank of America at Warner Road and McClintock Drive, pulled out a gun and ordered everyone to the ground.

Witnesses say the masked man pointed a gun into the faces of several people.

While he was robbing the bank tellers, one of the customers got out of the bank and dialed 911.

Police responded nearly immediately and were able to tail the suspect through Tempe, Chandler, Mesa and Scottsdale.

They reached speeds upward of 100 mph.

The suspect crossed the center line and slammed into another car head-on near McKellips and Dobson roads. Both drivers were killed instantly.

The suspect may also be responsible for a Mesa bank robbery last week, another Tempe robbery and three bank robberies in Chandler.

Investigators have not released the names of the victim or the suspect.

PREVIOUS REPORT: TEMPE - A high-speed police pursuit Wednesday ended in a deadly head-on collision.

A suspect reportedly robbed at gunpoint the Bank of America near Warner Road and McClintock Drive in Tempe, according to Sgt. Mike Horn with the Tempe Police Department.

The suspect fled and led several different police agencies on a high-speed chase through several cities.

The suspect's car collided head-on with another vehicle near McKellips and Dobson roads.

The Department of Public Safety says two people were killed in the collision.

The suspected bank robber and the lone occupant of the other vehicle were pronounced dead on scene, but both of them have not been identified by police.

Police said the suspect was wanted in connection with three other bank robberies, two in Chandler and one in Mesa.

The Department of Public Safety said proper protocol was used in the pursuit of the suspect.

Stop sticks were used to try to stop the fleeing suspect, but it is unknown what exactly caused the two cars to collide.

It has been reported that speeds in the chase reached 100 mph.

Police continue to investigate this deadly crash.
