PHOENIX -- There are three important questions you need to ask before buying insurance on the exchange, explains Jeff Stelnik from Blue Cross Blue Shield.
"The first thing I would suggest is understanding whether you have a grandfather plan today," he says. "For some individuals who have a grandfather plan, they are able to stay in their old plan and have it probably be cheaper, have more flexibility in the benefits that they offer and it might be more beneficial to stay where you are rather than purchasing on the exchange."
Despite our gorgeous weather, some people only live here part of the year. What should you know if you travel a lot? Here's Stelnik’s tip number two: "It's important to understand, is my doctor in the network and what happens if I travel? Many plans on the exchange will not have an out-of-network benefit, and I don't think that will be immediately apparent to someone when they come to purchase online."
You should also be aware that you can only purchase a policy at certain times. Here's tip number three: "They believe, when they get sick, they'll just purchase a policy then," he says. "It's important that people understand that's different from the way today's world works, where you can apply for a policy at any time. It's only during this open enrollment period that people can enroll in an individual market. “
