GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- West Valley Hospital opened a Level 1 trauma center on Monday.
The trauma center located near McDowell and Litchfield roads in Goodyear will serve Arizona communities up to the California state line.
The center will provide 24-hour emergency care and advanced treatment options for traumatic injuries.
More than 70 mock drills were performed 24 hours a day for 17 continuous days to prepare for the opening.
The drills included high-pressure situations such as car accidents, serious falls, gunshot victims and stabbing victims, according to Dr. Christopher Salvino, West Valley Hospital's trauma medical director.
The hospital underwent a $26 million expansion project, which added two trauma operating suites, two trauma resuscitation bays and 32 new private patient rooms. The hospital also added more than 50 surgical specialists to the staff.
