PHOENIX -- According to a new report, the first study to find a link between childhood vaccines and autism was based on false information about the children involved.
The conclusion of the 1998 paper by Dr. Andrew Wakefield and his colleagues has already been widely discredited, but the suggestion that the MMR (measles, mumps rubella) shot was connect to autism scared parents all over the world.
The Lancet, which first published the study, retracted it last year.
The new report by a British journalist calls Wakefield's study "an elaborate fraud," saying it was deliberately falsified.
