PHOENIX -- Heavy drinking rocks the central nervous system and leads to headaches, dizziness, nausea and dehydration. The morning after, often includes a pounding headache, fatigue, cotton mouth, queasy stomach and weakens the immune system.
Men have a higher percentage of water in their bodies, which helps dilute alcohol when they drink. When women drink the same amount, more alcohol builds up in the bloodstream.
Not only bingers get hangovers. A couple of drinks can trigger a hangover.
Wine is not the best to drink, since they contain tannins, compounds known to trigger headaches. The gentlest choices are vodka and gin. Don’t drink liquor before beer, it’s the amount of alcohol you drink (not the order of your drinks).
Don’t eat pasta before bed. Eating at bedtime is no help. Food has to be in your stomach, before happy hour to have any impact.
Drink water to fight dehydration.
Taking pain relievers before bed will peak in about four hours. Don’t take acetaminophen (Tylenol) after drinking; it could hurt your liver.
Alcohol does not help you sleep well; it’s just the opposite.
The hair of the dog, does nothing more than postpone a hangover.
Coffee is not the cure, a lot of coffee causes dehydration. Water and sports drinks counter dehydration and replace lost electrolytes.
And herbal remedies usually don’t help, including yeast and artichoke extract.

- Eggs contain cysteine, an amino acid that helps break down an alcohol-induced toxin called acetaldehyde.
- Dried apricots are an excellent source of potassium.
- Probiotics are the good bacteria found in the gut.
- Coconut water is packed with electrolytes and potassium.
- Tomato juice is packed with antioxidants and electrolytes. Skip the alcohol and go with the “Virgin Mary”.
