FOUNTAIN HILLS, Ariz. -- A runaway car jumped a curb and plowed into a Fountain Hills home Wednesday afternoon.
A woman was driving her car along Palisades Boulevard when it broke down around noon. She hopped out to push the car out of traffic while her friend got behind the wheel to steer.
The women were at the top of Sage Drive, which is a steep road, when they somehow lost control of the car and it went racing down the street. Maricopa County sheriff's deputies said the vehicle reached speeds of 70 or 80 mph.
Deputies said the vehicle jumped a curb and was airborne for about 10 to 15 feet before it slammed into the side of a home at the end of the cul-de-sac.
Deputies said the brakes didn't work and there was no power steering. It is not clear if the driver tried the emergency brake.
The woman in the car suffered only minor injuries and no one else was hurt. Deputies said she did an incredible job steering the car as best she could to avoid other obstacles, including a steep cliff.
The home was vacant, but it recently had been sold.
