PHOENIX -- Record heat has the Valley on high alert.
“Yeah it's too hot,” said Lorenzo, a valley landscaper.
It's too hot for people working outside and it's too hot for Holdeman Elementary School students to have recess on this, their first day back to school.
“When they finish their lunch they'd typically go outside for about 20 minutes,” said P.E. Teacher Tim Roberts.
The Tempe Elementary School District is keeping a close watch on the mercury rising and the ozone levels, opting to keep students indoors on these high pollution and heat advisory days.
“You got to bring them in or they'll play basketball until the sweat pours down and get overheated not come back in the classroom and function as well,” said Roberts.
This way the kids get to blow off some steam inside with friends without having to endure the dangerous heat.
“Make no mistake about it, this heat is deadly,’” said Phoenix fire Capt. Scott McDonald.
Paramedics with the Phoenix Fire Department expect to be busy all week with heat related illness calls that they say could be prevented.
“You can take care of yourself and be safe in the heat,” said McDonald. The secret, according to McDonald, is, “Hydration, hydration, hydration and when I say that I mean water.”
The Salvation Army Project Hope has made it easy for people to stay hydrated with water stations set up all around town ready to help the hot and thirsty.
What they are running low on is sunscreen, hats and nylon bags for water to go.
