SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Surprise police say a teenage boy who was shot by officers Wednesday morning was intending to use police to "commit suicide by cop."

The incident happened shortly after 9 a.m. in the neighborhood of Reems and Waddell roads, which is about seven miles north of Luke Air Force Base.

According to police, the teen aimed a rifle at police officers, who were responding to a call of someone in a backyard with a gun. Sgt. Bert Anzini said the investigation revealed that the teen was the caller and lived at the home.

The 16-year-old did not comply with officers' orders to drop the weapon and they fired at him, striking him in the leg. He was air-lifted to John C. Lincoln Hospital and later released into police custody.

Anzini said evidence on scene and statements made by the suspect indicate that it was his intent to use police to commit suicide by cop.

No police officers were injured in the incident.

The teen was booked into the Maricopa County Durango Juvenile Detention Facility for two counts of aggravated assault.
