TEMPE, Ariz. -- Get a glimpse of the deep sea right here in the Valley as SEA LIFE Arizona debuts their “Crazy for Coral Spring Break Event”, unveiling their new 340-gallon coral reef tank and giving visitors the opportunity to learn more about this underwater habitat.

“Crazy for Coral” gives visitors the chance to view interactive demonstrations, learn more about coral reefs, and even meet mermaids!

The event will kick off SEA LIFE Arizona’s new coral reef tank that will be home to a variety of coral species and sea creatures.

“Having a live reef tank has always been one of our goals at SEA LIFE Arizona,” said general manager Hayley Townsend. “It is extremely important that we recognize the diversity of life that is found in coral reefs and do what we can to protect them.”

Visitors can watch the coral tank become a beautiful display of these underwater ecosystems.

“We’re starting small, basically all of these will be kind of like a garden patch,” said Collinske.

SEA LIFE Arizona says the tank will take months to develop as they introduce different coral in stages.

Species like acropora, mushrooms, and leathers will thrive among clownfish, cardinal fish, tiger pistol shrimp and goby, Sea Life Arizona’s symbol of ocean conservation.

“We are hoping that most of the coral that lives in our tank will be collected from local captive raised sources, rather than sourced from the ocean,” Townsend said.

Local coral hobbyists can donate coral by submitting pictures of their captive raised coral to the SEA LIFE Arizona Facebook page or sending them to arizonasealife@sealifeus.com.

“Crazy for Coral Spring Break Event” will run through March 24. Also through March guests have the chance to buy discounted Annual passes for $35 each. Passes grant unlimited admission to the aquarium for a year along with monthly members-only benefits.

SEA LIFE Arizona is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Note the last admissions are one hour prior to close.
